Hyderabad, January 30, 2008

The State Government has decided to widen nine important roads covering nearly 1,252 kms in the State under Public Private Partnership mode in a phased manner. Of the nine proposed roads, three roads with a length of about 515km will be taken up for widening from two lanes to four lanes in nearly four to five months. It will be completed within a span of two years time. Toll tax will be levied on the transport operators.

In the first phase, three roads that are proposed are Hyderabad-Karimnagar-Ramagundam, Narketpally-Addanki Road and Puthalapattu-Naidupeta. Speaking this to the media on Wednesday, the Minister for Roads and Buildings, T Jeevan Reddy said as the roads are being taken up under PPP mode, toll tax will be levied which will be somewhat ten percent less when compared to toll tax of the National Highways. He said two and three wheelers, school buses, ambulances, vehicles carrying agricultural products and local vehicles would be exempted from the tax.

He said cars, toll tax will be 50 paise per km, one rupee for light commercial vehicles, and Rs.2 for buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles. The contractors will be allowed to collect the toll tax up to a period of 20 years after that it will be taken over by the State Government. Tenders for the above three roads would be floated in March and works are exempted to commence in four to five months.
