Sector to contribute 4.64 percent of GSDP
Hyderabad, January 26, 2008The Chief Minister, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy along with Minister for Agriculture, N Raguveera Reddy formally inaugurated the annual event being organized by the Department of Horticulture. The 18th annual Horticulture Trade Fair showcasing different varieties of fruit and ornamental plants started here on Saturday. The five day fair with close to 170 stalls set up at People’s Plaza on the Necklace Road has a wide variety of plants, including hybrid fruit plant varieties, avenue plantations, ornamental plants and indoor plants on display.
Speaking to media, the minister for Agriculture, N Raghuveera Reddy said that the government was working out modalities to introduce new and emerging technologies in horticulture to give further fillip to the sector. He said efforts have been initiated in the sector and steps were taking to provide an interface between farmers, investors and researchers.
He said that the extent of horticulture crops in the State was 17.85 lakh hectares and it was proposed to increase the area by another 1.2 lakh hectares before the current financial year. He added that the horticulture sector was presently contributing 4.64 percent of the GSDP.
