Hyderabad, January 23, 2008

A gang of four who dupes with promise of selling gold at throwaway prices are being arrested. Two members pose as cops and scare away the victims at the time of the trade-off, inflicting a double whammy on them loosing both money and gold. The Task Force (Central Zone) officials picked them on finding them moving in suspicious circumstances.

On interrogation, the gang admitted to having cheated 39 persons to a tune of Rs.63 lakhs over a period of four years. The police recovered one kg of gold, Rs.78,000 in cash, a van, a weighing scales and weights from them. According to Task Force Inspector M Srinivasa Rao said that one B Sudheer Kumar ganged up with Suresh, Prakash and Ravi to commit crimes in Hyderabad, Ongole, Nellore, Rajahmundry and Kakinada.

The modus operandi of the gang was to befriend co-travelers during bus and train journeys and offer to sell stolen gold at throwaway prices. When the co-travelers fall for the bait, they fix up a place for exchanging the gold for money. Even as the transaction is on, two gang members materialize in police uniform and take away the money. The Task Force DCP VB Kamalsasan Reddy supervised the operation.
