Blast at Telugu Ganga Project work site

Three persons dies, Twenty injured

Hyderabad, February 24, 2008

According to the available information, a fire broke out at the work site at Telugu Ganga Project. The blast happened at the work site at Mallepalle village of B Mattam Mandal in Kadapa district today. Three persons are reportedly dead and twenty others are injured. The death toll is likely to increase. Search and rescue operations are still in progress.

Sources say that four gas cylinders exploded and fire spread to the storage area of the cap, where the gelatin sticks and blasting caps are kept. This triggered the explosion. Fire tenders from Mydukur and Badvel rushed to the spot along with police personnel led by Mydukur DSP Krishna Kumar. Immediately, search and rescue operations were taken up.

The injured workmen were rushed to the Government Hospitals in Proddatur, Badvel and Porumammila. District Collector, MT Krishna Babu, SP Y Nagi Reddy rushed to the spot immediately on receiving the news. Mydukru MLA DL Ravindra Reddy along with Badvel MLA DC Govinda Reddy also visited and supervised the rescue operations. The works at the site are being carried out by Southern Engineering Workers Limited. Police began investigating the case.
