Charged for allegedly extorting bribes from passengers
Hyderabad, February 2, 2008The official of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today conducted surprise check at the Hyderabad Airport and arrested seven custom officials including two officials of the rank of Superintendent on the charge of allegedly extorting bribes from passengers.
The officials sized foreign and Indian currency worth Rs.75,000 , several cartoons containing imported liquor bottles, some 40 passports, cell phones, a laptop and other electronic goods. A CBI team descended on the airport around 1.30pm and raided on the Customs counter.
According to CBI officials, the passports of the passengers who failed to pay custom duty and such passports are handed back only after they pay a bribe. The arrested officials are Superintendents Rami Reddy and Ananda Rao, Inspector Vijay Kumar and Contingent staff Raghavendra Kumar, Raju, Bojja Raju and Satyanarayana. They were making Rs.60,000 in just one shift, the officials said.
