TDP President Chandrababu Naidu comments that the budget is disappointing

Says Budget ignores key sector and burning problems

Hyderabad, February 16, 2008

The Leader of the Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu described the budget that was presented today described as disappointing as it ignored several key sectors and the burning problems of different sections of the people. Speaking to media, he exposed the government its lack of concern to the backward classes, who constituted 52 percent of the population.

The budget speech of the Finance Minister, K Rosaih made a passing reference to handloom sector that was in crises. In fact, a Cabinet sub committee headed by the Minister had recommended a Rs.300 crore package to help the distressed handloom weavers. Similarly, there was no mention for the physically handicapped who had taken to the path of agitation.

He charged the government of heavy borrowing in presenting such a rosy budget. The prioritites of the government in the exercise were misplaced. Its policies were aimed at helping some individuals, particularly irrigation contractors, mining lessees and promoters of Information Technology firms in SEZs earning thousands of crores of rupees.
