Hyderabad, February 16, 2008

The Congress Government today presented in the Assembly Rs.1,00,436 crore budget for the financial year 2008-09 to please all the sections of people. The highlights of the budget are revival of Rs.2kg rice scheme and upping the allocations for irrigation and housing sectors. For the rice scheme that is being resurrected after 25 years, the subsidy would be of the order of Rs.1,980 crore to benefit 80 percent of the population.

The Finance Minister showed a revenue surplus of Rs.709 crore that is 0.2 percent of the GSDP. The fiscal deficit is estimated at Rs.9,657 crore which is 2.82 percent of the GSDP. After taking into the account of overall transactions, the year will end with a net surplus of Rs.134 crore and a cash balance of Rs.120 crore.

In his fifth successive and the 13th budget presentation in his political career, Rosaiah made a mention of the eagerly awaited Chevvalla-Pranahita Irrigation project that is estimated to cost Rs.17,875 crore. It will divert 160-tmct water from Godavari to irrigate 12.2-lakh acres land in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Medak, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts in backward Telangana region.
