Home Minister says DIG rank officer to probe Eluru incident

It may be recalled that the alleged misbehavior of police with the agitating MPTCs at Eluru a few days ago created a furor in Assembly. Some MPTCs were arrested at Eluru while they were staging a demonstration. The issue turned murkier with the police personnel asking the women MPTCs to remove their jewellery including ‘mangala sutrams’ before sending them to judicial custody.
The Home Minister, K Jana Reddy assured the Legislative Council that a DIG rank officer will probe into the alleged misbehavior of the police. The opposition MLCs raised the issued in the Council this morning. The Home Minister explained the circumstances that led the arrest of the MPTCs including MLC Y Babu Rajendra Prasad, who is also president of MPTCs Association.
The Opposition members not convinced with the explanation given by the Home Minister stalled the proceedings and entered into an argument with the treasury benches. They questioned how can the police ask the women MPTCs to remove their ‘mangala sutrams’. The Home Minister clarified that to the Jail manual prohibits the authorities from asking the persons to remove ‘mangala sutrams’. However, he said that the government will direct a DIG rank officer to probe the issue the issue and submit the same to the government and action would be taken on erring officials.
