Normal life paralyzed as several hectares of crops gets damaged
Hyderabad, February 10, 2008Due to the presence of a low pressure off the coast of Orissa to South Tamil Namil Nadu covering the coastal Andhra Pradesh since yesterday, the torrential downpour in the coastal districts claimed two lives of two teenagers besides damaging standing crops in thousands of acres. According to the Cyclone Warning Centre at Visakhapatnam, moderate rains are likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and heavy rains at a few places during the next 24 hours as trough persists.
According to available reports from Ongole, two youth belonging to the Devarampadu village of Ongole rural mandal were drowned in Ulichi stream when the country boat in which they were fishing hit the check dam and overturned. The rains also damaged groundnut crop in 30,000 hectares, 16,000 hectares were lost due to rains.
In Visakhapatnam, the downpour disrupted the normal life, the rainwater flooded the streets of Dabagardens, Poorna Market, Old Town, Seethampeta, Pendurty, and several other areas are till this morning. Several slums were flooded with drain water last night and the officials asked the inmates to evacuate their houses. However, flight services were not disturbed.
