Padayatra by Minister for Agriculture, Raghuveera Reddy from December 22

To cover six Assembly constituencies; Yatra to be flagged off by D Srinivas

The Minister for Agriculture N Raghuveera Reddy will undertake a nine day padayatra in six Assembly segments in Anantapur district to coincide with the release of water from Rs.600 crore Neelakantapuram Sriram Reddy scheme to 1,000 villages from December 22. Sources said that he will cover nearly 200 kms in Madakasira, Hindupur, Kalyandurg, Raidurg, Penukonda and Uravakonda constituencies and the padayatra will be flagged off by the PCC president D Srinivas.

Raghuveera Reddy said that it is the largest rural drinking water scheme in Asia and water will be supplied to 20 lakh people in 1,000 villages and four municipalities. Raghuveera Reddy speaking to media persons said that the scheme was conceived in fulfilment of his election promise made in the year 2004. He said that the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy would inaugurate the scheme at Hindupur on December 30. A public meeting is planned and eight ministers will participate in the yatra.

The ruling Congress party intends to derive political mileage for competing the scheme as major part of it falls in the the five constituencies that was represented by the Telugu Desam Party. He added that the yatra is aimed to enlightening the people about the government's commitment towards making up irrigation and drinking water schemes. Responding to a question, he admitted that his image was dented to some extent by the fertilizer shortage due to protests by the ryots. He said that he was a born politician and would not hesitate to spare his rivals.
