TDP MLA Karanam Balaramakrishna Murty suspended for six months

Resolution adopted on Privileges Committee recommendation

Hyderabad, August 26, 2008

The Deputy Speaker G Kutuhalamma on Tuesday announced the suspension of Karanam Balaramakrishna Murty, a TDP MLA from Addanki from Assembly for six months for his derogatory remarks against the Speaker, KR Suresh Reddy at a public meeting in Ongole in April last. After the House adopted a resolution based on the recommendations of the Privileges Committee, G Venkat Reddy chairman of the committee said members belonging to different parties unanimously felt that he had used the derogatory words in reference to the Speaker thus causing breach of privilege.

The committee viewed television clippings of the Ongole meeting and recorded evidence from the Government Chief Whip N Kiran Kumar Reddy who along with the other Congress members had given the privilege notice against Balaramakrishna Murty. Ten out of nineteen members of the committee recommended suspension of Balaramakrishna for six months.

The unsavory episode took place during the budget session when Ms Kuthuhalamma adjourned the House after suspending TDP members and retired into her chambers. The MLA Karanam held a meeting in Ongole to counter the charges leveled against him. He admitted that he had made certain remarks, maintained that these were directed against Finance Minister, K Rosaiah. The TDP members stormed the podium after the suspension was announced and the House adjourned for the day.
