Defamation case against TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu

Proceedings in the case stayed

Hyderabad, April 1, 2008

Justice G Bhavani Prasad of the AP High Court today granted interim stay of all further proceedings including the appearance of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N Chandrababu Naidu before the Judicial First Class Magistrate, Rayadurg in Anantapur district.

It may be recalled that a criminal case filed by G Janardhana Reddy, chairman of Brahmani Steels and Obulapuram Mining Company against N Chandrababu Naidu under the Defamation Act wherein it was alleged that he had made certain defamatory remarks.

The counsel for Chandrababu Naidu submitted to the Court that there is no material that the defamatory statements were made and that in the absence of any such proof, the prosecution is not sustainable. The counsel further submitted that there were no witnesses and that different newspapers had carried the remarks in different ways and that even if the remarks were attributed to him, stray words uttered should not be taken in isolation or delinked with the main issue.
