Hundreds of CPM activists arrested; Few injuered
Hyderabad, September 9, 2007As a part of Bhu Poratam, hundreds of activists were arrrested while trying to gratecrash the Minister's quarters on Sunday. The high drama of the Left party activists lasted for about a couple of hours. At around 8am, thousands of activists reached Banjara Hills under the leadership of local CPM leaders JK Srinivas, TSN Murty and L Srinivas. The trouble started when they tried to enter the Ministers' Quarters raising slogans. The leaders picked up an argument with the police that they should be allowed to meet the Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao.
At one stage, the police are left with no alternative to use the lathi charge to disburse the crowd who obstructed the vehicular traffic on the busy main thoroughfare. However, the police diverted the traffic and brought the situation under control. Nearly 1,000 activists were arrested and taken to Gosha Mahal Police grounds. In the melee, two women home guards including six women were hurt. One of the women who was seriously injured was admitted into Apollo Hospital.
Speaking to media, the Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao said that the Left parties need not organize demonstrations for house sites. The Government itself was committed to providing housing to the poor. The West Zone DCP Madhusudan and Central Zone DCP Iqbal supervised the bandobust near the Minister's Quarters.
