SHRC directs Government not to evict villagers by force

Directs not to close Government Schools in areas where SEZs would be coming

Hyderabad, September 6, 2007

The AP State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) on Thursday directed the State Government to submit a report by October 15 on whether people of 16 villages of East Godavari district were being forced to vacate their villagers to facilitate formation of a Special Economic Zone. It also directed the Government not to close the government schools in those areas as alleged until further orders and asked not to use any force to evict the villagers as well as not to withdraw any social welfare beneficial scheme.

APSHRC Chairman B Subhshan Reddy issued the orders acting on a petition filed by the villagers affected by the formation of Kakinada Ports Limited. The secretaries of the industries were mentioned as respondents. The allegation which has to be considered is undue influence that is being exerted by government officials in seeking to withdraw all social schemes. Another factor is that the government is coercing and using force against the villagers to part with their lands and even migrate from the villages.

The Chairman of APSHRC Reddy said if the both allegations are true, then certainly there is a violation of human rights of such villages.
