MIM men stones at CPM padayatrya

Left parties vows to liberate Old city from MIM stranglehold

Hyderabad, September 3, 2007

The friction between the MIM and the CPM in the Old city reached a flash point on Monday with the activists of the former raining stones on the padayatrya undertaken by the Marxist member of the Rajya Sabha P Madhu in the Falaknuma area in the evening. Four CPM activists suffered injuries even as tension prevailed in some localities. The CPM leader said he would not be cowed and went ahead with the padayatrya. He later addressed a small meeting at Mustafanagar which is considered as MIM bastion.

Over the past one year, the CPM has been slowly but surely acquiring a presence in the Old city giving anxious moments to the MIM leadership. With elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation round the corner, the CPM has intensified its activities and Madhu has been assigned the job of taking the party to the masses.

On Monday evening, Madhu along with party supporters took out a padayatrya in Falaknuma. Activities allegedly related to the MIM party attacked the CPM workers with stones at three places in the region. Four Left party workers who suffered injuries were shifted to hospital. Additional police forces were rushed to the area while police are put on alert in other parts of the city. The CPI State secretary K Narayana described the incident as unfortunate and said the Left parties would continue to put in efforts to free the Old city from the stranglehold of MIM.
