Directs Finance Minister to estimate funds required for the scheme
Hyderabad, September 28, 2007
The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy is seriously contemplating revival of supplying Rs.2 kg to all families living below poverty line (BPL) families. Sources say that the Chief Minister has asked the Finance Minister, K Rosaiah to estimate the additional funds required for the scheme. He also asked the Civil Supplies Department to work out modalities for the scheme implementation. As of now, the rice subsidy scheme is implemented in a diluted form by selling rice at Rs.5.25 per kg to white card holders through ration shops.
Though the process is in planning stage, a final decision would be taken on October 1 after consideration all the factors and modalities. Meanwhile, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) charged that the Congress has hijacked its proposal to announce inclusion of the rice subsidy scheme in its manifesto. The TDP Polit Bureau was discussing the proposals which got leaked. It faced a barrage of charges on Friday over its move to include free power supply in its manifesto.
However, the CMO claimed that the Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy had been toying with the idea for some time to ensure food security to the poor, as he was now able to provide them with a house under Indiramma Scheme and low interest loans.
Statistics show that the rice subsidy scheme would benefit 1.86 crore people in the state. Under the existing scheme, 2.42 lakh tonnes of rice is provided every month to 1.71 crore beneficiaries at Rs.5.25 per kilo. In addition to 55,000 tonnes of rice is supplied a month to 15.5 lakh beneficiaries at Rs.3 a kg under Antyodaya Anna Yojana scheme, a scheme offered by the central government.
