India to take up 60 space missions in next five years

Hyderabad, September 24, 2007

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister's office, Prithviraj Chavan after inaugurating the five day 58th International Astronautical Congress on Monday said that the country will fly 60 space missions in the next five years. He said that the proposed missions will focus on navigation, positioning, advanced communications, earth observation and space science.

The five-day conference which will deliberate, among other things, the future of international space programmes. The meet assumes significance, coming as it does, in the golden jubilee year of Sputnik 1, the World's first satellite. The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Madhavan Nair underlined the social dimension of the Indian space programmes.

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy appreciated the organizers for choosing a socially relevant theme for the conference - Touching Humanity: Space for Improving Quality of Life. The ISRO Chairman listed the Chandrayaan-1, launching of GSLV and PSLV as the organization's immediate goals. He said that they are using this congress to the maximum effect, speaking to heads to the space agencies of the US, Europe, Germany and Russia on international space collaboration.
