Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee demands handover of bomb blast case to CBI

Charges investigating agencies of torturing Muslim youth

Hyderabad, September 23, 2007

The Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee said on Sunday that the only a CBI can save Abdul Majeed, brother of terror suspect Abilal alias Shahid and several Muslim youth of the city who were being tortured by police teams investigating in the August 25 twin blasts in Hyderabad.

Speaking at a press conference in the presence of the family members of the youth under police custody, the general secretary Lafeef Mohd Khan said that the police had arrested 26 youth after the twin blasts. Abdul Majeed has been detained for 23 days and another youth, Mohd Shakel for 13 days, he alleged. The police have denied the allegations made by the committee.

The Committee president Rehana Sultana said Muslim youth were being lodged in cells at the Greyhounds Centre and other farm houses in the Gandipeta area. The committee also demanded that the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy take responsibility for the illegal detention of Muslim youth and take steps to hand over the case to CBI.
