Hyderabad, September 20, 2007
In the wake of raids across the State, the Drug Control authorities busted an Inter State racket dealing spurious drugs and seized drugs worth over Rs.5.36 crore. The huge quantity of drugs seized included those manufactured illegally and marked as 'Physician's samples and Government Supply.
At a press conference, the minister for Hospital Services and Drugs Control Administration V Venkateswar Rao said that the drugs manufactured without valid licence alone were worth over Rs.4.8 crore. The Minister said apparently an inter State network existed as the spurious drugs seized from Jeedimetla were believed to be supplied from New Delhi. The minister said that the Government would file criminal cases against those involved irrespective of their stature.
The Director General of Drugs Copyrights and DCA, RP Meena said a huge quantity of illegally manufactured drug, 'Novogra' was seized from a manufacturer in Balanagar was meant for export to Africa and other developing countries. He said an amendment bill would be introduced in the next session vesting Drugs Control authorities with powers for arrest and interrogation.
