Registrations in select categories made between April 1, 1999 to June 20, 2007 would get canceled
Hyderabad, September 19, 2007In an unexpected move, the State Government issued orders to cancel all assigned, endowment and Wakf lands made during the past seven years. Not surprisingly has evoked mixed response from various quarters of the society - both from legal experts and the political circle. The State Government has brought an ordinance amending the Registration Act. The amendment empowers the department to stop registration of the above said lands.
The Government has also issued orders canceling all the registrations of the three category lands made between April 1, 1999 to June 20, 2007. For this purpose, the Government has brought in Registration (Amendment) Act, 2007. Section 21A of the Act prohibits registration of assigned, endowment and Wakf lands.
Meanwhile, senior leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) T Devender Goud found the decision as funny. He said that if the Government uses the Act for protecting its own property, no one should oppose it. But, taking cover of the Act, the Government should not harass innocent people, he felt. The CPI State secretary, K Narayana objected the Government's unilateral decision. The senior High Court advocate, S Ramachandra Rao described the Government's order as unconstitutional.
