Hyderabad, September 1, 2007

UPA Chairperson Ms. Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the second phase of the Indiramma Program at Thummuluru in Guntur. She reached Guntur after taking part in a program at Rajahmundry. She interacted with the women beneficiaries of Self Help Groups.

Chief Minister Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy asked questions to the Self-Help Group women who look loans for Rs. 0.25 interest. He said that the Banks will be willing to give loans to a larger extent when they repay back on time. He felt that the self help groups should grow to the extent of taking a loan of up to Rs. 10 Lakhs. On asked as to what she is doing with the loan amount, a women replied that she is rearing cattle and that this has brought her additional income for their family. She said that with the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, her family is able to survive on days when there is no employment.

Ms. Sonia Gandhi distributed chqeues under various schemes to the eligible people. Speaking to the people, she said, "Sisters and Brothers, It is with great pleasure that i stand here today amongst you particularly because that this place is visited by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. We women are all aware that we have to carry on our shoulders that is equal if not more the burden that men have to carry. We have to work in the fields some times take jobs outside the house and we have to look after our children... It is with great happiness that I inaugurate the second phase Indiramma program. I congratulate the Chief Minister Rajasekhara Reddy garu and all of the MLAs and Ministers.. I hope with all these you will be able to have a better future for yourself, your family and for your children.. Thank you"
