SHRC directs district administration to make elaborate arrangements
Aluru - Kurnool, October 21, 2007
The State Human Rights Commission has directed the district administration and the police to make elaborate arrangements on the eve of the festival of Mala Malleswara Swamy on the hillock at Devaragatta in Kurnool district to prevent bloodshed during the festival.
The SHRC took note of the 'Bunni' rituals in which several hundreds of devotees fight each other with clubs, causing injuries. 'Bunni' rituals take place between midnight of Sunday and into the wee hours of Monday. The police deployed over 1000 personnel at the temple and also set up 12 check posts to ensure that the devotees did not carry even sticks up the hillocks.
Special teams carried out intensive operations in surrounding villages and seized a large number of sticks and clubs. Elders said that the rituals were not as violent as carried out by media. They were primarily only a mock fight and the injuries were caused accidentally, said the villagers.
