CM announces implementation in a phased manner
Hyderabad, October 11, 2007The Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy at a high level meeting on Thursday with Transport department has decided to replace 1.10 lakh auto drivers in the twin cities and decided to phase out the three wheelers over a period of four years and replace them with cabs. He directed the Transport department officials to formulate a bank linked schemes so that the auto drivers can switch over to taxies. The transport department had, in fact been planning to cosign the ubiquitous autos to history for a variety of reasons.
The Chief Minister to ward off resistance from auto drivers, using the 25 paise interest scheme and under the scheme, each driver will be granted a loan of Rs.4lakhs. The Chief Minister will be talking to bankers about it at the State Level Bankers' Committee meeting in the near future. It is a reality that if the all the 1.10 lakh auto drivers seek loans, the banks have to shell down more than Rs.400 crores.
The Minister for Transport, Kanna Lakshmiknarayana said at a meeting that the auto rickshaw unions was convened on October 24 to discuss digital meters issues and the phasing out of the three wheelers will be deliberated too. He said that the on going drive against illegal transport operators, the Transport department has seized 2,734 vehicles during the last five days and collected Rs.1.61 crore penalties from illegal operations.
