Dental College students agitation takes new turn

Hyderabad, October 1, 2007

After prolonged agitation of the Osmania Dental College students to slip out of hands, the State Government finally intervened on Monday and sent the Principal, Dr. Kamala Devi to go on long leave. The impasse, that began 38 days ago assumed alarming proportions three days back with scores of students locking themselves in classroom and launching an indefinite fast. Some of the health condition of the students deteriorated.

The Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy deputed the Minister for Health Education, Galla Aruna Kumari to mediate. The minister along with the Health Secretary and other officials went to the college to talk to the students. The fasting students locked themselves in a room refused to allow the Minister inside unless she gave an assurance in writing. She was allowed inside after much persuasion.

While, the agitating students demanded transfer of the in charge principal, she offered to send her on long leave and order an inquiry. The Minister, Aruna Kumari announced that principals of Osmania and Gandhi Medical Colleges will conduct an inquiry and submit a report within fortnight and also appointed Osmania Medical College Principal Ashok Kumar in charge principal of the Dental College. The protesters whose condition deteriorated were shifted to the hospital.
