It may be recalled that the police arrested two reporters B Urukundu of Andhra Bhoomi and B Sriramulu of Andhra Jyoti were arrested on the charge of forgery, cheating, public mischief and harming the reputation of individuals on Wednesday. The reporters who were lodged in the sub jail and the journalists' union refused to avail of the bail offered by the authorities on Thursday. They are likely to be in the prison till Monday as they demanded dropping of all cases at once leading to their unconditional release.

The two reporters reportedly supplied the inputs for a news report that claimed to have unveiled a scandal in the Indiramma Housing Scheme which was published a fortnight ago. The news report which was published was intended to highlight the laity ands carelessness in execution of housing programme.

The journalists supported by Opposition parties, organized a rally and road blockade at the Collectorate on Thur and burnt the effigy. Sensing high level trouble, the police offered to arrange a bail for the two reporters though it was a holiday for the court but were turned down by the union leaders and news paper managements. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy ordered a high level inquiry into the incident. Speaking to media on Thursday, the Chief Minster directed his principal secretary to inquire into the circumstances leading to the arrest of the scribes and also assured an inquiry into the gruesome attack and chopping off the hands of a scribe at Maddikera in Kurnool district.
