Kurnool, November 10, 2007

Two stringers of a vernacular dailies based at Kodumur in Kurnool district were arrested by the police on the charges of reporting baseless reports on alleged scam in Indiramma scheme. Media persons took out rallies across the State protesting against the arrest of two reporters by Kurnool police. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy called for a detailed report on the incident.

The police arrested the two reporters on the basis of a complaint lodged by village secretary of Laddagiri village in Kodumur Mandal and were remanded to judicial custody till November 20 and lodged in Kurnool Sub Jail. The journalist unions strongly protested the arrest and staged demonstrations at several places demanding immediate release of the two reporters.

The APUWJ obstructed the convoy of the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy when he reached Kadapa on Thursday afternoon. The Chief Minister met the delegation of the APUWJ and asked the District Collector to get in touch with his Principal Secretary Jannat Hussain and obtain a report immediately and promised to look into the matter. The APUWJ, the Hyderabad Union of Journalists, the Andhra Pradesh Electronic Media Journalists Association and the Press Club have decided to organize a Chalo Assembly programme on November 12 to protest against the illegal arrest of the reporters. They condemned the arrest as a direct attack on the freedom of the Press.
