Chief Minister urges Prime Minister for Classical status to Telugu language

Says Classical status for the language is long over due

Hyderabad, November 24, 2007

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday urged the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh to take immediate steps for declaring Telugu as a classical language.

The Chief Minister addressed a letter to the Prime Minister said that all available records suggested that Telugu’s antiquity dated back to more than 2000 years. He added that even by going by the criteria given to the official notification, the status of classical language of Telugu was long overdue. He further added that any further delay in declaring Telugu as a classical language would be tantamount to ignoring the sentiments of Telugu people.
