Demand for Minimum Support for Paddy gains momentum
Hyderabad, November 18, 2007The Farmers’ organizations affiliated to various political parties have given a state-wide bandh call on November 21 in protest against the indifference in enhancing the Minimum Support Price for Paddy to Rs.1,000 per quintal. Representatives of the CPI affiliated AP Rytu Sangaham, CPI (M) Rytu Sangaham, TDP’s Telugu Rytu, Bharatiya Janata Kisan Morcha and TRS’ farmers’ wing launched an indefinite hunger strike on Sunday to mount pressure on the Government to concede their legitimate demands.
The Telugu Rytu President Ch Muthyam Reddy and Rytu Sangaham President K Ramakrishna speaking to the participants said that the organizations would intensify their protest if the government fails to enhance the Minimum Support Price for Paddy and other crops.
The BJP State president Bandaru Dattatreya called on the agitators and wanted the government to understand the concerns expressed by farmers and concede the demand. He faulted the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh for his lack of understanding of farmers’ issues, he expressed his surprise how the increased production target by three million tones could be achieved if remunerative price is not paid to farming community.
