Government defends case against reporters
Kurnool, November 13, 2007On Tuesday, the Additional Munsif Principal Magistrate Judge, L Tejovathi granted an unconditional bail to the two reporters of vernacular dailies on the condition of furnishing a bond for Rs.10,000. It may be recalled that the two reporters were arrested on November 7 on the charge of intimidating and blackmailing Ladddagiri village secretary, Maddeleti.
On October 22, two Telugu dailies had carried out a news report stating that the District Housing Officials had sanctioned Indiramma houses for Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Marketing Minister, M Mareppa and local MLA, Sikamani and cine actor Akkineni Nagarjuna at Laddagiri village of Kodumuru mandal. However, the Journalists Unions are continuing their agitation demanding withdrawal of the cases registered against the two journalists.
In the Assembly, the Home Minister, K Jana Reddy clarified that the government doesn't bear any grudge against the journalists. It is only investigating if the claims they had jade in their report are true. He also given clarification that the government is not in a hurry to punish the reporters and the Chief Minister had agreed to order to appoint an officer of the cadre of DIG to inquire into the incident and the report will come to the government by Wednesday evening and then the government will meet the journalists' associations.
