Kurnool, November 11, 2007

The Additional DGP (Administration) and is also the spokesperson for the State Police in a press meet on Sunday defended the action of police in arresting the two reporters. He said that the Kurnool based reporters were arrested on November 7 and were remanded to 15 days judicial custody. He added that the police arrested the two reporters based on a prima facie evidence for carrying a false news story in their respective dailies. He said that their arrests are based on the circumstantial evidence, cell phone records and examination of witness.

The issue is likely to figure in the Assembly on Monday. The two dailies carried stories on October 22 stating that the district housing officials sanctioned houses to Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Marketing Minister, M Mareppa, local MLA M Sikhamani and cine actor Akkineni Nagarjuna under Indiramma Housing Programme at Laddagiri village of Kodumur mandal

The media persons when confronted with the Additional DGP Khan charging the police and other authorities with falsely implicating the two reporters, Khan said that there is prima facie evidence against the two. He asked the press persons to challenge the same and approach the SHRC or submit a petition in the Court. The police had registered cases against the two reporters under various sections of IPC.
