Reddy in convicted double murder case
Hyderabad, November 1, 2007The State Government on Thursday released Gouru Venkat Reddy, a Congress leader on 30 day parole from Cheerlapalli Central Prison. It may be recalled that he was convicted in a double murder case for ten years and he had applied for parole to fulfill his family obligations. He already served five years of his sentence. Venkat Reddy is considered to be a close associate of the Chief Minister.
The Congress leader from Kurnool district was convicted in the year 2000 for the murder of two activists belonging to the Telugu Desam Party. Venkat Reddy was earlier released on August 15, 2005 following remission of his sentence by the then Governor Sushil Kumar Shinde on the advice of the State Government and in October 2006, the Apex Court quashed the amnesty granted to him.
Speaking to media after his arrival to the native village Brahmanakortur on Thursday evening said that he did not apply for parole six months after the Supreme Court verdict so as not to bring a bad name to the government. He pointed out that under the Constitution, any convict can apply for parole every six months. He pointed out that due to media, number of prisoners who have been languishing in jail are not be release. Meanwhile, his release drew sharp criticism from opposition party.
