Cracker unit blast in Chaknawadi

11 children and 3 adults injured with serious burns

Hyderabad, November 1, 2007

On Thursday evening, nearly 11 children and 3 adults were injured when crackers went off accidentally at an illegal unit in Chaknawadi under Shahinayatgunj police limits. According to police sources, the house was owned by one Narsing who employed local children, all are school going for Rs.50 per day in the unit to make crackers under the supervision of three adults

Incidentally, the unit was hardly 50 yards away from the police station and there is no way the police could not have known what was going on especially given the amount of activity in the house ahead of Diwali festival. The fire services department had too claimed to have launched a drive against fire cracker go downs in the residential areas in the city.

Parents and relatives of the victims were on the premises when the blast happened in the evening and the intensity of the blast was so severe that a two storied pucca house suffered heavy damage. Police shifted the injured to Osmania Hospital from where they were taken a corporate hospital. Meanwhile, the Minister for BC Welfare Mukesh Goud visited the hospital even as the police booked a case against the owner of the unit.
