Hyderabad, May 5, 2007

The State Government has prepared a list of 44 services for bring them into the purview of Service Tax under Central Sales Tax (CST) in a phased manner. The States have been asked by the Empowered Committee on VAT to phase out CST from April 1, 2001 in the light of the introduction of VAT. According to sources, the fresh list of 44 services that will come into purview are corporate hospitals, private corporate educational institutions, health clubs, gyms, music clubs etc.,

The Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konatala Ramakrishna speaking to media on Saturday said that he CST on the existing list of services had been reduced from four percent to three percent and the resulting loss of Rs. 400 crores on this account will be compensated by the Central Government.

He said that the Government's performance during the last three years, there was a 70 percent growth in commercial tax collections. He further added that the current financial year witnessed a growth of 26.64 percent compared to the last year.
