Hyderabad, May 23, 2007

The AP State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) on Monday issued notices to the City Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh and District Collector Chandravadan on the police opening firing on the mobs after the blast at Mecca Masjid on last Friday leaving five dead and injuring several people.

The APSHRC Chairman B Subhashan Reddy sought reports from the two officials on the circumstances that led the police firing. The APSHRC stepped in after MIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi submitted a representation to the Commission on the firing incident. He said that two complainants had met him a couple of days before and submitted representations. On Wednesday, the MP met him and submitted a representation in this regard after which the notices were severed on the officials and the case is posted to June 11. He added that in the representation submitted by Owaisi that there was no necessity of opening fire on the protesters that led to the death of five persons leaving several injured.

The Chairman of the APSHRC said that once the officials submit the reports, enquiry will be ordered accordingly. Meanwhile, the City Police Commissioner issued orders transferring two police inspectors for allegedly ordered the personnel to open fire on the protesters. The officials were asked to report to the control room.
