Guntur, May 2, 2007The APSRTC bus plunged from a bridge into the Gundlakamma rivulet at Peddavaram in Guntur district on Wednesday claiming nine persons leaving 34 injured seriously. According to sources, the driver of the bus that is going from Arumuru in Nizamabad district to Vinzamuru in Nellore district lost control and hit the railing of the bridge over the first pier. The bus fell down 20 feet down.
Passengers traveling in the bus, majority of them are construction workers employed in and around Hyderabad. People in the vehicles behind the bus plunged into the rescue operation but the task was rendered difficult as it was pitch dark. Vinukonda MLA M Mallikarjun, SP B Shivadhar Reddy and APSRTC regional manager rushed to the spot on hearing the news.
Meanwhile, the APSRTC Managing Director Dinesh Reddy flew down from the capital. He announced an ex gratia of Rs.1 lakh each to the families of the nine killed in the accident. And announced to bear the cost of the treatment for the 34 injured persons. The Chief Minister raised the upper ceiling on the ex-gratia by Rs.30,000 and given directions.
