Hyderabad, March 9, 2007

A day after officials of Income Tax claimed to have detected unaccounted wealth worth over Rs. 35,000 crore held by Pune-based businessman, the City Police began poring through their records following reports that criminal cases had been registered against a native of Hyderabad Mir Hasan Ali dating back to the 1990s.

According to media sources, a few cheating cases were registered against one Hasan Ali at the Central Crime Station besides a case against his for throwing acid on a doctor. Most of these cases date back to the 1990s. The City Police Commissioner, Balwinder Singh said that there are around seven criminal cases registered against him but the police were unsure if the Pune-based Horse trader and this Hasan Ali are the same. The Police Commissioner is hopeful of acquiring more information on Hasan Ali in the next couple of days and said that there was no request from the Income Tax Department or any other agency to check into the case but the police were doing so out of the increased importance and publicity surrounding the case.

Meanwhile, the officials of Income Tax Department denied reports that came in a section of the media that a raid was conducted in the city in connection with the tax evasion case.
