Khammam, March 9, 2007
Five persons died when they consumed adulterated toddy at Timmirigudem village of Charla mandal on Friday. Two children were among the dead. The victims belong to three tribal families. It is dietary habits of the tribal community here to consume fresh toddy as part of daily life. The toddy turned into poison is still a mystery. On hearing the news, the police rushed to the spot and started investigating.
Toddy pilferage was a common problem in the village, particularly during the summer season. Many feel that the toddy collected on the day was adulterated with some chemicals allegedly to take revenge on those involving in pilferage.
The District Collector, Satisibushana Kumar visited Timmirigudem to console the families. Bodies of the victims were shifted to Primary Health Centre for post-mortem. The District Collector ordered an inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, two persons were hospitalized in Dummugudem mandal of Bhadrchalam on Thursday. The victims are now out of danger.
