Chief Minister YSR speeks at public meeting

Hyderabad, March 8, 2007

The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy speaking at a meeting organized to mark the International Women's Day urged the public not to spend huge amounts of money on marriage ceremonies and felt that extravagant marriage is a social evil. He expressed anguish over the suicide pact by two sisters in Kalyanadurgam in Anantapur district. The duo resorted to this extreme step as their married posed a heavy financial burden on their family.

Dr. Reddy advised women to come up in life and achieve economic independence first. He opined that women can get married easily, if they were economically strong. He added that with an intention to help Hindu couple enter wedlock, the State Government was performing mass marriages with the help of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and are providing all material required for the marriages.

The Minister for School Education, N. Rajyalakhmi, State Women's Commission Mary Ravindranath, Chief Secretary J. Harinaryana and Secretary, Women and Child Welfare Vasudha Mishra were present on the occasion.
