Red Cross Society to open 18 new Blood Banks

89 Storage centres in the State

Hyderabad, March 7, 2007

The Indian Red Cross Society will be opening 18 new blood banks and 89 blood storage units in the State. As of now, there are only 23 banks and 3 blood storage centres. All thee are managed by Indian Red Cross Society in their own premises. With the help of Central funds under Reproductive Child Health II scheme, it will be launching the new blood banks and storage units. The new units are likely to be ready at various Community Health Centres, area hospitals and PHCs in the State.

The new banks will be started at Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Prakasam, Kadapa, Kurnool, Anantapur, Chittoor, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nizamabad, Guntur, Medak and Rangareddy districts. Three storage centres in Srikakulam and seven in Visakhapatnam and four in East Godavari, five in West Godavari, four in Krishna, four in Guntur, four in Prakasam. Six in Kurnool, six in Anantapur, five in Chittoor, four in Khammam, four in Nizamabad, four in Warangal, three in Mahabubnagar, four in Medak five in Nalgonda and two are coming up in Ranga Reddy districts.

According to reliable sources, there is a need for about 8 lakh units of blood across the State. All blood banks are able to meet nearly half of the requirement. The main aim of the Red Cross Society is to make available a blood storage facility every fifty km.
