Delegation asks the Centres intervention on Babli project

Hyderabad, March 31, 2007

The All Party delegation led by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy met the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and urged to resolve the issue of Babli barrage project. The delegation submitted a memorandum seeking Centre's intervention in stopping the construction of the controversial project on Godavari. The memorandum said that the project was violative of the agreement signed by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra way back in 1975.

Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have been at loggerheads over the Bhabhali project which Mumbai maintains is necessary to provide water to parched Marathwada region while the Andhra Pradesh Government says the project would deprive seven drought prone districts of the Telangana Region.

he delegation included the Chief Minister, former Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu and representatives from all political parties including AP Congress president K. Keshava Rao, Bandaru Dattatreya of BJP, S. Malla Reddy of CPM , K. Narayana of CPI, Vinod Kumar of TRS and Mohd Morzam Khan of MIM. The delegation in another memorandum also requested the Prime Minister's personal intervention to ensure justice for OBC students.
