State Government declares March 20 as optional Holiday

Controversy over Ugadi Festival still continues

Hyderabad, March 16, 2007

Keeping in view of the controversy surrounding the date of Ugadi celebrations, the State Government, after consulting with religious heads has declared March 20 as an optional holiday. This is the first time that the State Government has already declared a general holiday immediately followed by an optional holiday for the same festival.

The President of the State Bharateeya Janatha Party (BJP) B. Dattatreya decried the Government's interference in religious issues and described its unilateral announcement of Ugadi as holiday on March 19 as unwarranted. N. Innaiah, chairman, said that the Government should let people celebrate the occasion according to their belief. He contended that holding of Panchanga Sravanam by the Government too amounted to violation of Article 51A.

In a related development the Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal declared that March 19th is a general holiday in view of Ugadi instead of March 20.
