Government favors March 19

Hyderabad, March 15, 2007

To put an end to the controversy over the date of Ugadi festival, the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah announced in the Assembly on Thursday that March 19 has been declared as a holiday for Ugadi Festival after ascertaining opinion from three dozen peethadhipathis and Mathadhipathis.

He announced that when the difference of opinion came to the notice of the Government, it conducted a meeting with religious heads and took the decision. He said 32 heads ruled that Ugadi should be observed on March 19 itself which six others observed that the Telugu New Year falls on March 20.

After taking the opinion of the majority of the religious heads, the Government has decided to declare holiday for the Festival on March 19.
