Government requires Rs. 1 lakh crore for irrigation schemes

Hyderabad, March 12, 2007

According to sources, the State Government will require Rs. 1 lakh crore during the next few years to irrigate one crore acres of land in the State under Jala Yagnam. But the flip side is that at least 17,50,000 people will be displaced from the villages, couple of lakhs more than the population of GVMC and 25 percent of the population of the State.

The document that circulated in the recently held District Collectors' conference either revealed that 700 villages will be partially or fully submerged. Admitting that the figure is staggering, the Government said that atleast 3,50,000 families will be displaced.

It is understood that the Government advised the Collectors to implement resettlement and rehabilitation in a sensitive manner. The Government has so far acquired 2.5 lakh acres and is in the process of acquiring another 1.5 lakh acres.
