Death toll rises to 32; Heavy rains and floods continue
Hyderabad, June 23, 2007The scheduled aerial survey of the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday was cancelled due to inclement weather and will undertake on Sunday. Through out the day, the Chief Minister monitored the rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
Speaking at a press conference, he said that 32 were died in the floods and 14 labourers who were suspected to have been washed way in flood waters in Kurnool district. All the labourers hailed from Srikakulam district. Nine persons were died in Kurnool alone, five deaths were reported from Guntur, four from Prakasam, three each from Kadapa, Karimnagar and Hyderabad and two from Mahabubnagar and one each from Srikakulam and East Godavari and West Godavari. Five persons were found missing from Guntur and two persons from Kakinada, he said.
He further said that nearly 200 tanks breached and rail traffic in Kurnool district was badly hit with flood water flowing over the tracks. Roads were severally damaged at several places. Due to flood water overflowing, inter district and national highways at 132 laces affecting bus services severally. He stated that timely action by irrigation officials saved Nandyal town. The town faced the threat of inundation with an irrigation can breaching nearby. Irrigation officials immediately summoned earthmovers and breached the canal at two places a few kilometers away from the town and diverted the flood waters.
