More than 40 persons missing
Hyderabad, June 22, 2007Due to deep depression in Bay of Bengal, nearly 28 persons were killed and more than 40 persons were reported missing in floodwaters as heavy rain lashed in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra. The State Government requested the Army to stand by and instructed the District Collectors to evacuate people living in the low lying areas.
Full scale search operations commenced by the Coast Guard as nearly 40 fishermen were reported missing in the sea near the harbor town of Kakinada. The Chennai-Kolkata National Highway was cut off as the streams overflowed into the road at several places. The Guntur-Nandyal track was washed away. In Guntur division, several trains were cancelled and some were diverted.
The Chief Minister reviewed the situation and announced an ex-gratia of Rs.2lakh each to the families of the dead. He ordered two helicopters to be kept ready for relief and rescue operations in Kurnool and Nandyal, the two towns worst affected in the floods. Satish Chandra, the senior IAS officer rushed to Kurnool to monitor the situation.
