Chief Minister directs ministers to rush flood hit areas

To supervise the relief an rehabilitation operations

Hyderabad, June 22, 2007

The Chief Minister Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy directed the Ministers to rush to the flood affected areas and to supervise the relief and rehabilitation operations. He himself cut short his two day visit to Delhi in order to review the flood situation. He requested the AICC leadership to excuse him from joining them when the UPA's candidate for the Presidential election, Patibha Bharati, files her nomination papers on Saturday.

Earlier, the Chief Minister reviewed the situation arising out of heavy rain and floods in the State and directed the Chief Secretary, J Harinarayan and Special Secretary P Subramanyam to revive the food control and monitoring system at the Secretariat. The officials sought the help of Army and Navy personnel and their immediate intervention to rescue people straned in buses on the Mahanandi-Kurnool road. Boats were pressed into service wherever necessary to rescue people.

The Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konatala Ramakrishna said that though the government ordered deployment of a helicopter at the request of the local administration to rescue people stranded near Orvkal, the effort was aborted due to inclement weather and lack of safe place for the chopper to land. He said there was no human loss.
