Government to obtain permission from CWC
Hyderabad, June 20, 2007The Andhra Pradesh High Court directed the State Government to halt the construction of multi purpose Polavaram Project. A division bench comprising of Chief Justice GS Singhvi and Justice R Subash Reddy on Wednesday directed the Government to obtain permission from the Central Water Commission (CWC) for construction of the multi purpose Polavaram project within three months.
While disposing of a batch of writ petitions filed by Prof. Kodandarama Reddy and others questioning the Polavaram Project, the Division Bench issued the order. The petitioners contended that the State Government neither secured permission from the CWC nor had taken up resettlement and rehabilitation measures for over two lakh tribals who would be displaced by the project. They also stated that the government was trying to go ahead with the project without complying with all formalities.
The Division Bench, while delivering the judgment directed the government to rehabilitate the displaced first and also proceed with the land acquisition according to the law. The Court directed the government to first pay the compensation to the displaced and then take up the construction work.
