Four Ministers make unsuccessful attempt

Hyderabad, June 2, 2007

The unsuccessful attempt by four ministers to persuade the four day old fast of the Mala Mahanadu president J Prabakara Rao who is agitating against the opposition of categorization of Scheduled Castes failed. The Ministers led by the Minister for Social Welfare, P Subash Chandra Bose who called him twice to persuade the three major demands put forth failed.

The ministers were deputed by the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy to persuade him following the leader's insistence that he meet him personally. The ministers agreed to constitute an expert committee to study the social, financial and other issues facings SCs. They also conceded the demand to form a committee of Ministers, MPs and MLAs along with a Mala Mahanadu nominee to represent to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister, Man Mohan Singh on the issue.

The Mala Mahanadu leader insisted to scrap the Usha Mehra Commission for which the Minister Subash Chandra Bose expressed his unwillingness. Meanwhile, at one stage, the president of Mala Mahanadu appeared to convinced by the Ministers' action, but a handful of activists threatened to immolate themselves if he ended his fast without securing a specific commitment from the Government. He said that he will decide the future course of action after ab emergency meeting on Sunday with party activists.
