Court gives verdict in Tsundur Dalit Massacre case
Guntur, July 31, 2007The special court judge Anees on Sunday sentenced 21 accused to life imprisonment and 35 to a year in jail and imposed a fine of Rs. 1000 or in lieu of that another prison term of one month after sixteen years of the Tsundur Dalit massacre.
The court acquitted 123 others. In a macabre attack in 1991, people belonging to the upper classes killed eight dalits in Tsundur in the district. A special court was constituted in the Dalit Wada in 2000 to try the accused. During the last 16 years, 33 persons of the accused and 20 of 134 witness passed away.
In the judgment, Judge Anees held that the Tsundur case was not the rarest of the rare and the death penalty could not be imposed. She said that the village had a history of caste tensions and murders were committed only in a fit of range. She opined that there was no evidence of conspiratorial pre meditation in the attacks.
