Medical counselling begins amid ABVP protests

Protest against Muslim quota

Hyderabad, July 24, 2007

Counselling for admission to medical and dental courses was marred by protests by the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) against the four percent reservation to Muslims. Nearly 20 ABVP activists managed to hoodwink the police and scaled the compound wall of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences in Vijayawada. The police canned the protesters and took them to the police station. However, the protesters stalled the counselling for over an hour.

On the first day Counselling, 923 seats were filled up and out of them, 918 for medical and five for dental courses. The University officials called the candidates with ranks upto 1,000 and 967 candidates attended the counselling at all the centres across the State. The Minister for Health G Aruna gave the acceptance letters to the three third rankers as there is no first rank and all the three opted Osmania Medial College.
